| What is Reiki? This page is spilt into following section Welcome, So what is reiki?, A brief history, The Reiki Principles and What Reiki Isn't
In these pages I hope to give a brief overview of the way I see Reiki , along with a few links so that you can explore the subject further yourself . The site will be an ongoing project for me and therefore will grow with time. Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a method of natural healing based on the application of Universal Life Force Energy (the name literally means Universal Life Force Energy). In the west it is taught as a hands on healing system, but originally in Japan it was taught as a secular enlightenment system and healing system This system was developed by a Mikao Usui (Pictured above) in around 1914, although many claim that it is a much older system than that, going back to the Buddhist sutras or that he rediscovered the healing techniques used by Jesus Christ, or even that it was brought to this planet by aliens. There are also many who believe that Usui was a Christian monk (These stories seem to have appeared when Reiki was brought to the west) although research has shown that this wasn't the case. It would appear that these stories were told as teaching stories by Mrs Hawayo Takata when she introduced Reiki to the west. One of Mikao Usui's students was a Dr Chujiro Hayashi , a navel officer in the Japanese navy. Several years after Usui's death in 1926, he opened his own clinic and developed Usui's Reiki system further. In 1935 Mrs Hawayo Takata, a Japanese American lady, was accepted into Hayashi's clinic for training , she returned to Hawaii in 1936. In 1937 Dr Hayashi visited Hawaii to promote his system and certified Mrs Takata as a Reiki Master early in 1938. The second world war then interrupted the growth and it was thought that during that time that Reiki was lost in Japan, leaving Mrs Takata as the last keeper of the knowledge. Mrs Takata returned to Japan in the early 1950's and found that Reiki movement had become small and closed off. She returned to Hawaii and started practicing and teaching Reiki and it was not until the early1970's that she visited mainland America and started to teach there. In 1975 she developed heart problems, it would appear that she then started to train others as Reiki Masters. Mrs Takata died in 1980, leaving 22 Reiki Masters trained by her and it from them that Reiki grew in the west. These days there are many different forms of reiki practiced and taught. For myself, I prefer to keep it simple and practice and teach Reiki without all of the modern add-ons.
A fuller timeline of the events can be seen on the Aetw Website The Reiki Principles are the heart of Reiki. They come from the Meiji Emperor and have been part of the Buddhist tradition. When you integrate them into everyday life you may find that they are there when you anger or worry etc. This helps you see the conditioning that cause these feeling.
